The International Optimist Dinghy Association gave an up-date of their year so far at the Youth and Development Committee meeting today. What a great year they have had:

2 new Optimist fleets in Iran and Albania.

Costa Rica, and Mozambique joined IODA.

Equipment grants to El Salvador and Paraguay.

Training courses in Vanuatu and Sudan and another due in Paraguay.

Athlete participation grants for El Salvador, Philippines, and Indonesia.

Developing a recylcing scheme in the US with North Sails sending old sails to emerging nations.

The Optimist class is at the heart of encouraging female participation in sailing. This year the African Open Champion is a girl from Algeria and girls won the Open Asians, Closed Oceanians and Open Oceanians.

And of course all the thousands of children around the world sailing an Optimist on any given day in the year.

I’m sure there was more. The great results were coming out faster than I Could take them down.

Thank you to everyone involved in IODA for all they do in growing the sport
